2022 Race Recap

Senior Walk
Over 32 years there is an established history of excellence at the Canton Fall Classic. With modest cash rewards for performance most of the course records have become “elite” level – a status few local races ever reach. However, Trevor Wysong was undeterred – smashing a 16 yr course record by 35 seconds in the 5k and sailing past the finish line over a minute and a half before the next runner. Trevor led the field through the first mile in 4:39 and averaged 4:45 per mile while clocking 14:47 overall. Luke Devin nipped Eddie Katz for second place. 17 year old Hailey Desmarais (18:50) easily topped the women’s field over a minute ahead of second place Chloe Hill. Long time race veteran and 60 yr young Gayle Liang finished third.

On a perfect day for racing the 10k also yielded competitive results. Hanover’s Jonathan Joyce (32:32) comfortably topped Ryan Collins (34:08) from Portland, Me. Jonathan passed three miles in 15:23 before the Elm St hills slowed him a bit. Rachel Schilkowsky finished fourth overall while running sub 6 minute miles to a 36:55. Rachel passed the three mile mark in 17:27. Second place for the women was Canton’s own Lauren Tarvin in 39:21. Lauren’s time was good for 7th place overall and she was the first Canton finisher in the 10k.

In the fun run it was truly girl power! 9 year old Olivia Raffetto (6:08) outsprinted Cora Fernsten (6:10) for first place. (on a side note, Olivia’s dad Louis won the 5k 3 times in the past and has a 10k victory as well). Girls took 3 of the top 4 spots and 7 of the top 10. 8 year old Peter Heffernan (6:46) was the top boy in third place. Peter’s brother Thomas was 5th.

Race day began with the senior walk. As has been the case in the past, many participants came from Orchard Cove, a major sponsor of the race. Participants ranged in age from the 60's to 97 years young.
